Working with weave artisans in Myitkynia in Kachin State. Consulting for Turquoise Mountain I am looking at heritage techniques and pattern language with various weave communities across Myanmar.
Myanmar has an extraordinary rich and diverse textile heritage , influenced by neighbouring countries . The patterns and weave techniques are regionally very distinct . Here in Kachin State cloth is woven on both hand looms and using the traditional back strap technique.
Kachin weaves are typically brightly coloured with extraordinary complex geometric patterns.
